Physical Reserve Items
- Physical reserve items are course materials (e.g., journal articles or book chapters) placed on reserve by faculty that are made available in the Library.
- Searching: To find the call number of a physical reserve item, go to the Library catalog and click the Course Reserves tab. Use the drop down box to search by course instructor or course number.
- Location: Physical reserve items are located at the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor.
- Circulation: Circulation policies for reserve items vary depending on the item. Most reserve items cannot leave the Library.
- Copies: To make copies of physical reserve items, you will need a VendaCard. VendaCards are available in the Student Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Library. For more information, see the Library's Copying Facilities and Policies web page.
- Overdue Fines Reserve items cannot be renewed for more time. Additionally, there is a 25 cent per hour, per item, per day fine for materials not returned on time.
Electronic Reserve Items (E-Reserves)
- Electronic reserve items are course materials (e.g., journal articles or book chapters) placed on reserve by faculty that are made available online via the Library's web site, or directly at http://dclweb.dyc.edu/eres/.
- Searching: To search for electronic reserve items, use the link above, then click on Electronic Reserves and Course Materials, and use one of the drop down boxes for course instructor, course name, or course number.
- Passwords: Passwords are needed to access electronic reserve items. Students must obtain the passwords from their instructor. (NOTE: E-Reserve materials must be password-protected to ensure that the D'Youville College Library is in compliance with the "fair-use" guidelines of U.S. Copyright Law.)
- Viewing: Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view electronic reserve items since all items are PDF documents. The software may be downloaded for free from the Adobe web site. All Library research workstations are equipped with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Printing: To print electronic reserve items, only use the print icon within Adode Acrobat Reader. If you use the print icon in the browser tool bar or File > Print from the browser menu, you will not print the PDF document.
- Assistance: For assistance accessing electronic reserve items, contact a librarian at the Reference Desk at 716-829-7747 or refdesk@dyc.edu.

Faculty E-Reserve Request Form (PDF File)
- The decision to make course materials available online is made by course instructors only. Instructors must formally request that those materials be placed online.
- Requests for course materials to be placed online will not be processed without a request form that has been fully completed and submitted by the respective faculty member.
- Faculty requests for course reserve materials to be placed online must be submitted with those materials at least two weeks in advance. Reserve materials cannot be made immediately available online and will be queued behind prior requests.
- Copies of course reserve materials to be placed online must be of optimal quality and must be submitted in a copy-ready format.
- All copied materials should include a complete bibliographic citation and notice of copyright.
- Course instructors are responsible for providing their students with E-Reserve passwords, which will change every semester. Passwords will be provided to instructors when reserve materials have been placed online.
- Faculty must provide written copyright permission if the course materials
to be placed on reserve:
- Have been previously used by the same instructor without permission from the copyright holder(s);
- Are to be used to create anthologies, compilations, or collective works;
- Are consumable copyrighted works such as workbooks, exercises, standardized tests, or test answer sheets; or,
- Are to be used for more than one course.
Copyright Information
The Montante Family Library has adopted a strict interpretation of copyright laws as they relate to course reserve materials. The following restrictions apply:
- The Montante Family Library may accept one copy only of any copyrighted item, which may be held on reserve for only one academic semester. Reserve materials cannot be placed on reserve again without written copyright permission, which the course instructor is responsible for obtaining. Such permission must then be provided to the library. All reserve materials will be removed at the end of each academic semester unless permission has been provided to the library's course reserve coordinator. NOTE: Faculty members may visit the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) or the United States Copyright Office online to expedite the permission process.
- A photocopy of one chapter from a work of a single author, or not more than three chapters or articles from a collective work or periodical volume may be placed on reserve over the course of an academic semester. Of these, not more than one article from each collective work or periodical volume may be held on reserve at the same time.
- Anthologies and course packs cannot be placed on reserve without written permission from the copyright owner(s).
- No photocopies of consumable works such as standardized tests, workbooks, answer sheets, and solution manuals can be placed on reserve.
