Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Services
The mission of the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department at the Montante Family Library at D'Youville College is to support the research and teaching needs of the D'Youville College community, by expanding the availability of scholarly and academic materials beyond the physical and electronic collections of the Montante Family Library. This department provides materials either in the form of article delivery or short-term loan from a network of local, statewide, national and international libraries.
The ILL service allows D'Youville College students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni (with some restrictions) to borrow dissertations & theses (faculty and graduate students only), books & non-print materials, and/or journal articles not held by the Montante Family Library.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I participate in ILL?
- ALL ILL borrowers MUST be registered Library Patrons, in good standing, with no overdue books or fines. To verify your library status, please see an ILL Librarian at the Reference Desk, or email refdesk@dyc.edu.
- ILL users are allowed to place up to five requests per day.
- Interlibrary loan request forms may be submitted online, using the links listed above. Print forms are available at the Reference Desk, library 3rd floor. Submit them at the reference desk, by campus mail, or by fax to 716-829-7770.
How do I contact a librarian with questions?
- Visit a librarian at the Reference Desk, 3rd floor library.
- Telephone a librarian at (716) 829-7747.
- E-mail a librarian at refdesk@dyc.edu.
What kinds of materials are available via ILL?
- Journal articles and most books circulate via ILL.
- Special collection items, such as test files, videos, DVDs, computer files, CD ROMs, reference books, and text books are very difficult to obtain via ILL. See a Reference Librarian for assistance.
What are the borrowing restrictions for ILL items?
- Journal articles become your property; they do not have to be returned.
- Books & non-print materials must be returned and are usually loaned for 3-4 weeks.
- Some dissertations must be returned in 3-4 weeks, others become your property.
- ERIC Documents arrive on microfiche and can only be used in the library. They are available for 3-4 weeks.
Can I use ILL to obtain textbooks?
- The Montante Family Library strongly discourages students from requesting class textbooks through Interlibrary Loan. In most cases, requests for textbooks are not filled by other libraries. If they are filled, the requests usually take longer than 10 days to be processed because multiple requests must be placed before finding a library willing to loan the item. Additionally, it is rare for a student who receives a textbook via Interlibrary Loan to have the book for the entire semester. Please speak with a librarian if you have questions.
How long does it take?
- Most ILL requests are filled and available for pick up within 10 days.
How will I know when my item is in?
- You will receive notification via your DYC e-mail account when your ILL items are ready to be picked up at the reference desk, Library 3rd floor. You may also call, visit, or e-mail the library reference desk to ask if your items have arrived.
- ILL items must be picked up and returned to the Reference Desk. Items will not be mailed to patrons.
Can I renew an ILL item?
- Patrons may request renewals via telephone, email, or at the Reference Desk.
- Renewals are granted by the lender, not DYC.
- The Montante Family Library cannot guarantee the lender will approve a renewal.
- It is the patron's responsibility to check renewal dates and return the item on time.
- Patrons may call, email or visit the desk to ascertain the new due date after renewing an item.
- There is a $1/day fine for all overdue items. Replacement cost is $45 per item.
- ***Journal articles do not need to be returned to the library.***
ILL & Copyright Law
Copyright Law - Title 17, United States Code:
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in this law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction of a copyrighted item. One of the specified conditions is that a photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purposes other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
Copyright Law & the DYC College Library Policy Statement:
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a request for duplication if, in its judgment, fulfillment of that request would involve a violation of copyright law.
Copyright Law as it Applies to the DYC Library & ILL:
Under copyright law, the Montante Family Library may request, in one calendar year, no more than a total of five articles from the last five years of any journal title. If, within the parameters of one calendar year, the Library has already submitted requests for a total of five articles from any one periodical, no further requests can or will be submitted for articles from that publication until January 1st of the following year. Under such circumstances, when no further requests can be made of a particular journal, it is not the Library's decision, it is the law!
Information for Borrowing Institutions
Adhering to the highest principles of librarianship and resource sharing, the Montante Family Library does not charge for loaning materials through interlibrary loan. The Montante Family Library does, however, actively participate in a consortium of lending institutions through the Western New York Library Resources Consortium (WNYLRC), and affords its fellow members preferred borrowing privileges. When and if the Library receives a request that it cannot fill, a reason will be provided in the form of a number from OCLC's official list of reasons why a request cannot be filled.
