The Montante Family Library Collection

The Montante Family Library collection consists of books, periodicals, online databases, audiovisual materials, and microforms, all of which are either purchased through the Acquisitions Librarian, or acquired through gifts to the library. Materials purchased for the collection are based upon the cumulative decisions of the library's Subject Specialists, and the recommendations of DYC faculty and students. The library collection is an ongoing, evolving resource that is built and maintained to support DYC's academic mission of research and scholarship.

Collection Development Policies

• Based upon the highest principles of academic librarianship, the Library supports the academic disciplines that compose DYC's core curricula--not any single class or course. As such, the library does not purchase course text books, nor does it unnecessarily purchase multiple copies of any title.
• Faculty members wishing to recommend the purchase of books or audiovisual materials for the Library collection should consult the library's Subject Specialist that is responsible for that particular subject matter.
• Faculty members wishing to recommend the purchase of periodicals for the Library collection should consult the Library's Periodicals Librarian.
• Faculty members wishing to recommend the purchase of online databases for the Library collection should consult the Library's Systems Librarian.
• The Library has very strict and specific procedures with which to purchase materials, and as such, cannot purchase "review" items for or from DYC faculty members. Acquisition requests and recommendations should be submitted to the Acquisitions Librarian, or to the Subject Specialist that is responsible for that particular subject matter.

Gifts to the Library

The Library welcomes and heartily appreciates gifts. Donations enrich and enhance the collection, and contribute to the Library's Mission of supporting DYC's academic programs. Monetary and in-kind gifts are a vital part of Library's resource development.

Donation Guidelines

• All donated items become the property of the Library, which reserves the right to decide what will be added to the collection or discarded.
• Monetary donations to the Library may be made in honor or in memory of an individual. Bookplates may be placed in or on materials purchased from such a donation. Information to be put on these bookplates should be supplied by the donor. The Library will honor all reasonable requests for the use of donated funds, but those requests must conform to the parameters of the library collection, based upon its Mission. Please mail all monetary donations to the Office of Institutional Advancement, D'Youville College, 631 Niagara St., Buffalo, NY 14201. Please make all checks payable to the Montante Family Library.
• Gift materials are received by the Acquisitions Department, except for journal donations, which are handled by the Periodicals Librarian. The Library's Subject Specialists will decide on the disposition of donated materials, according to established criteria. Materials that are not needed, or that are unsuitable for the library collection, are sold or donated to other agencies. Materials in unusable condition are usually discarded. Materials with restrictions requiring special handling, or non-integration into the library collection are not normally accepted.
• The determination of a gift's value for tax purposes is the donor's responsibility. The Library will acknowledge gifts by letter, specifying the date of receipt, and the number and type of donation(s). Monetary appraisals will not be included.
• The Library regrets that it cannot pick up donated materials, unless very special circumstances exist. If the donor wishes to deliver the items to the Library, the Acquisitions Librarian should be contacted to set up a mutually agreeable time.
